ADULT CERAMICS CLASSES

Pushing the Limits and Get Turned On By Clay - NEW
Come explore a new dimension of ceramics - paper clay as a utilitarian & sculptural medium. Learn ways to make pieces that are impossible with other clays. Work that is:  strong, easy to build, large or small, weightless.  Mugs, bowls, plates, teapots, sculpture, you name it, we will build it. Students pursue their personal style & projects. Paper-clay and/or all studio clays can be used.

Exploring Pattern and Vibrancy through Hand-building
This course will walk through the fundamentals of hand building, including slab, coil and pinching techniques. We will combine the use of multiple processes to develop complexity in both form and surface. The objects we generate will function as canvases, becoming a surface to embellish with pattern, color and imagery.

Develop Your Own Style

You have basic hand-building and wheel skills, now you can take your work to the next level by developing you own style. This class will expose students to various ways of personalizing their work. We will refine thrown and hand-built forms as well as experiment with surface treatments. The instructor will work closely with individual students to help them develop their work.

High Fire Stoneware and Beyond

We will be exploring the teapot, both functional and sculptural. Students may also work on their own projects and bring ideas for forming and decorating techniques to class. We will also continue to work on decoration and glazing in cone 6 and 10. Intermediate/advanced course.

Find Your Way with Clay

This is an intermediate/advanced course. We will be exploring the functional teapot, along with matching cups, creamer and sugar bowl. We will also work on decoration in cone 6 and 10. Students may also initiate their own projects. The course will be student driven, we will concentrate on the things you want to learn.

Wednesday Fun with Clay!

Spend a relaxed Wednesday night in the studio working with clay. Consider this to be a fun class with lots of room for experimentation. We will explore different techniques such as; throwing and slab work, surface, texture and sculptural elements. Lots of personal instruction. All levels and abilities are welcome!

Beginning Spinning

This class is perfect for the absolute beginner, as well as students with some experience that wish to expand upon their knowledge of the potter's wheel. Each week we will learn how to make a different form on the wheel such as plates, mugs, bowls, vases and more, at a slow and steady pace. To train your muscles on how the mechanics of pottery work, we will focus on making each form several times. We will also explore some hand building and surface decoration techniques to bring our pots to the next level!

Wheel Creations and Surface Decoration

Whether you are a complete beginner, or have some skills under your belt, this wheel throwing class will give you tools and inspiration to make beautiful cups, bowls, vases and serving dishes. This session will have an emphasis on surface decoration techniques. From sgraffito, mishima, image transfers and more, we will explore different ways to add imagery to our pots. Come join the fun!

Independent Study in the Ceramics Studio

One amazing feature of the Umbrella’s Ceramic program is the option to work here independently!  Experienced adult ceramic artists may register for independent study. Independents have the same access to the studio as other enrolled students and have their work fired on our normal schedule.
