Student Accommodations for Virtual Learning

Dear Parents and Guardians,

When we return to school in September, all of our Syosset students will be actively engaged in learning five days a week.  As previously announced, we are currently planning for in-person teaching and learning in grades K-8, and an alternate-day plan for in-person and virtual learning in grades 9-12.  Our parent/guardian survey indicated strongly that Syosset families want as much in-person instruction as possible, consistent with all health and safety requirements.

We are very much aware that some of our students may have medical reasons that require special consideration and that may not allow for in-person teaching and learning during this time. We also understand that, as a result of the COVID-19 crisis, families may wish to opt for an all-virtual learning experience for their child.  To prepare for our students that need an all-virtual learning experience and to plan for the number of students returning for in-person instruction, we have developed this simple questionnaire.

Please note that a request for in-home, all-virtual student instruction necessitates a commitment on the part of the parent/guardian. So that the District may plan accordingly for the number of in-person students while remaining in full compliance with all NYS health and safety requirements, we are asking that should you opt for all-virtual instruction, the commitment would initially be for the entire 2020-2021 school year.

If you would like to request 100% in-home, all-virtual instruction for your child please fill out this form in Family ID by August 7, 2020.

Should circumstances change that necessitate a student’s return to in-person instruction, a request may be made at specific points throughout the school year. To request a return to in-person instruction for their child, a parent/guardian must submit a letter of request to the school building principal.  

  • Parent/Guardian requests for an elementary student (grades K-5) to re-enter for in-person instruction will be honored at the beginning of either the second or third trimester. Elementary letters of request will need to be submitted no later than November 30, 2020 or March 8, 2021.
  • Parent/Guardian requests for a secondary student (grades 6-12) to re-enter in-person instruction will be honored at the beginning of the second, third, or the fourth marking quarters.  Secondary letters of request will need to be submitted no later than November 2, 2020, January 18, 2021, or April 5, 2021.
