Northport-East Northport Union Free School District

Dear Music Parent and Student,

Each spring, the New York State School Music Association, “NYSSMA,” gives exceptional student musicians an opportunity to perform a solo that is rated by a qualified adjudicator.  This year the solo festival will be scheduled at Northport High School on Wednesday, April 1, 2020 and Thursday, April 2, 2020 between the hours of 4:00-9:00 p.m.  Students who meet the standards set below and wish to participate must register below.

STANDARDS-In order to participate, the student must:
1.  Be able to prepare the solo outside of class time.
2.  Be responsible for transportation to and from the festival.
3.  Supply two (2) original copies of the solo to be performed.
Xerox copies are not permitted.

Participation in the Festival is valuable, as it provides the music student an opportunity to receive an important evaluation of their performance by a State trained and appointed adjudicator.

It is not necessary, or even recommended, to progress at a rate of one level per year. The student’s actual level of performance ability should determine which piece (or NYSSMA Level) is selected, not the level performed the previous year.

It is further recommended that the music student learns the standard literature for the instrument or voice. Learning one solo per year, strictly for NYSSMA evaluation, will not, necessarily produce a well-developed musician.

Following the NYSSMA Festival, your NYSSMA Evaluation sheet will be returned to you so that student and teacher can address strengths and weaknesses of performance.

Hoping this information is helpful to you, I remain
