Musketaquid Arts & Environment - Adult, Youth, and Family Programs - Spring 2019

Through an integrated program of classes, community celebrations, and public art, Musketaquid promotes a discovery of the arts, a connection to place and nature, and environmental activism. See below for Adult, Family, Teen and Youth programs.

ADULT CLASSES

Creative Nature in Art NEW!
Creative and fun classes to be held outdoors and sometimes indoors, per weather conditions. Relate to nature as a vast measure of your physical environment and an important emotional source. How does nature affect us in terms of mood and thought, and how do we integrate its treasures into our creative process? With guidance and review from the instructor, produce varied works inspired by nature. Hone your observational skills through practice. Slow down and capture the environment with pencil, color, and paint; make prints and mixed media collages from objects in nature.

Basketry: Quilted or Swirling Star Bowl

Using colored reed, students will lay out a design that will be the focal point of the bowl shaped basket. Students can choose from a couple of designs and colors to create their own unique variation. The bowl will be woven in a twill pattern of natural color weavers. Bowl measures approximately 12” in diameter. This basket looks great hung on a wall.

Basketry: Weaving with Vines and Branches

Students will explore weaving and creating various shaped baskets and basket-like structures using vines and branches. Learn how vines in various thicknesses can be used both to create the structural part of the weaving and as the weavers themselves. Branches will be woven with vines to create scoop-shaped weavings suitable for use on a table for serving or displaying a collection or hung on a wall as a decoration. All creations will be as varied as nature itself!

FAMILY EVENTS & WILD WALKS

Earth Float, Parade Making, and Puppet Refurbishing Workshops at the Umbrella (All Ages)
Stop by to make a costume, headdress, puppets, and/or floating tributes to the Earth for the Earth Day Celebration! Or help us refurbish some of our favorite giant puppets: Otter, Pileated Woodpecker, Owl, Eagle, Gray Fox, and Blue Jay!

Family Nature Skills Festival

Spend the afternoon learning to start a fire by friction, whittle sticks, make crafts and tools with natural materials. Learn how to see the forest through an animal’s eyes and move with stealth; listen to and identify birds; and learn about wild edibles.

Fairy Houses at Fairyland Pond

Our 5th Annual Fairy House outing to the Town Forest! Stop by the Fairyland Pond path in Hapgood Wright Town Forest for an hour or two. Observe Umbrella artists at work on their own creations, and make your own magical space for visiting fairies and other natural spirits. Using sticks, bark, leaves and other found natural objects, build a house, a garden, and/or furniture to make a welcoming home.

Bird Walk with Peter Alden

Led by naturalist Peter Alden, this walk will explore Concord Land Conservation Trust’s Spaulding Land in search of birds, butterflies, bugs and flowers. This property primarily includes fields and wetlands, creating the opportunity to see the diversity of wildlife and plants. Bring binoculars (if you have them), rubber boots, and insect repellant.

TEEN and YOUTH CLASSES

Ninjas in Nature
Come learn the ancient nature-based arts of the ninja. This 8 week course will cover the Level 1 Ninjas in Nature (NiN) skills. This class will teach a combination of awareness, movement, survival skills, stealth and camouflage, fire skills, and an introduction in ninjutsu, or the art of the ninja. This class will be a combination of movement skills through games and agility training combined with focused hands-on skill time. Upon completion of each level test, students will receive a rank certificate, with an option to purchase a rank shirt and patch from Pathways Dojo (pathwaysdojo.com).

Ninjas Training Group
This weekly indoor "dojo style" self defense/martial arts class will follow a specific belt/rank curriculum under the licensing of Pathways Dojo. Students will also make ancient charcoal drawing pencils from willow and grapevine, learn kanji/calligraphy and plant/animal/landscape drawings that pertain to the study of ninjutsu. For more details on the intention behind this art element and how it pertains to the study of ninjutusu, see this video by Soke/Grandmaster of Ninjutsu Masaaki Hatsumi. Students will be expected to purchase the training videos that coincide with the rank progression so they can train at home and accelerate their belt progression.

Drop-In Art & Nature Play (All Ages)

Drop in the studio Thursday afternoons to create & play with seasonal art activities. All ages welcome. Weekly activity calendar will be posted on our website and facebook. Spring activities include: jelly prints, eco-dyeing, garden planting, bird masks, and musical instruments.
