The Mountain Pointe High School Band Program is again becoming recognized for excellence in performance! Moreover, the program provides an extensive variety of positive learning experiences for students of all ability levels, and from richly diverse backgrounds. A rigorous curriculum, and consistently high expectations for students' work ethic and behavior, continue to reap rewards and accolades for the MPHS bands - and myriad educational opportunities for the band students!
Our director, Leo Werner, founded the band, choir, and orchestra programs here at Mountain Pointe High School in 1991. For the next seventeen years, both as the band director and as the performing arts department chairperson, Mr. Werner led our music programs to prominence in Arizona and across the Southwest.
In 2008, Mr. Werner was recruited to become the founding director of the music programs at Combs High School, and to serve as the K-12 music coordinator for the Combs School District; in 2014, Mr. Werner accepted leadership of the band program at Brophy College Preparatory. In every school where Mr. Werner has served, the band programs quickly developed reputations for excellence in performance - and for highly effective teaching implemented in a compassionate and caring environment.
Having lived in the Ahwatukee community continuously throughout his teaching career, Mr. Werner was aware of and dismayed by the decline of the MPHS music programs since his departure. When our campus and district administration sought a solution to restore the band program, Mr. Werner was invited to resume his leadership here at MPHS. In the summer of 2017, Mr. Werner quickly assembled a team of band alumni, parent volunteers, band staff, and band students - who have all been working successfully together since that time, to rebuild and reinvigorate our band.
The efforts of our team are resulting in measurable success: our band program total enrollment has grown by 300%, from roughly 30 students in 2017-18, to just over 90 students this school year! Our performance ratings at concert and jazz festivals have climbed from "Good" to "Superior", and our concert bands and jazz ensemble now routinely qualify for the state concert and state jazz festivals. Our marching band resumed competition in the ABODA and AZMBA circuits, and has climbed steadily through the rankings - qualifying for state championships and finishing in the top ten in both circuits! We also recently resumed competition in the BOA national circuit, appearing in the Flagstaff Regional Championships last season.
Payments for the fees associated with the extracurricular elements of our programs are not collected through the Family ID platform! However, we do provide a link within Family ID for payment via our MPHS Band Booster PayPal account (for those who would like the convenience of electronic payment).
Thus, the listed "total due" at the end of your Family ID registration process, does not indicate what you will be expected to pay today: instead, your payment dates and amounts will be determined by which program(s) and which payment plan(s) you select.
