The Mountain Pointe High School bands are steadily regaining recognition for excellence in music performance; the band program is also once again providing a wide variety of positive learning experiences for students of all ability levels, and from richly diverse backgrounds. Our rigorous curriculum and our consistently high expectations for student work ethic and behavior, are resulting in awards and accolades for the MPHS bands, and expanding educational opportunities for the band students!
Our director, Leo Werner, founded the band, choir, and orchestra programs here at Mountain Pointe High School in 1991. And for the next seventeen years, both as the band director and as the performing arts department chairperson, Mr. Werner led our music programs to prominence in Arizona and across the Southwest.
In 2008, Mr. Werner was recruited to become the founding director of the music programs at Combs High School in San Tan Valley, and to serve as the K-12 music coordinator for the Combs School District; in 2014, Mr. Werner accepted leadership of the band program at Brophy College Preparatory in Central Phoenix. At every school where Mr. Werner has served, the band programs quickly developed reputations for excellence in performance - and for highly effective teaching implemented in a compassionate and caring environment.
Having lived almost across the street from Mountain Pointe throughout his teaching career, Mr. Werner was disappointed by the decline of the MPHS music programs after his departure in 2008. In 2017, when our campus and district administrations sought a solution to restore our band program, Mr. Werner was invited to resume his leadership here. Since that time, Mr. Werner, band alumni from his prior tenure, current parent volunteers, band staff, and band students, have all been working together to bring the band program back to its former quality and prominence!
Our combined efforts to rebuild are resulting in measurable successes: the band program total enrollment has grown from just under 30 students in 2017-18, to just over 80 students this school year - an increase of roughly 175% Our performance ratings at concert and jazz festivals have increased steadily from "Good" to "Superior", and our concert bands and jazz ensemble once again routinely qualify for the state concert and state jazz festivals. Our marching band resumed participation in the ABODA marching competition circuit, and also joined the AZMBA circuit - advancing through division rankings and qualifying this past Fall for both the ABODA and AZMBA state marching championships, and finishing in the top ten in both events! We also recently resumed competition in the BOA national circuit, appearing in the Flagstaff Southwest Regional Championships for the first time since 2004.
Payments for the fees associated with the extracurricular elements of our programs are not collected through the Family ID platform! However, we do provide a link within Family ID to facilitate payments vie our MPHS Band Booster PayPal account (for those who would like the convenience of electronic payment).
So, the listed "total due" at the end of your Family ID registration process, does not indicate what you will be expected to pay today: instead, your payment dates and amounts will be determined by which program(s) and which payment plan(s) you select!
