Dear Parents in the Northport-East Northport Community,
We are inviting your children to GET SMArT this summer!!! GET SMArT stands for
Get Engineering, Technology, Summer Music, Arts and Theater!
We are so excited to team up with our friends in the sciences, technology & engineering departments to now offer registration for courses in the Arts & Sciences this summer to be held at Northport High School from Tuesday, July 6th through Friday, July 30th. There will be an orientation for students and parents on Thursday, July 1st from 12-1 PM in the Northport High School Auditorium.
At this time, we are planning an "in-person" program that will include all course offerings that have been available in previous years, as well as several exciting new STEM courses! To register, please visit the district web page, then click on “Instructional Programs” and drop-down “Fine and Performing Arts.”
For parents of current 3rd graders, it is not required to select an instrument at this time. You will be hearing from our instrumental music faculty in the very near future regarding instrument demonstrations and selection. The focus at this time is to secure a space in our program.
Our half day program for 3rd graders will run from 7:30 AM until 11:30 AM daily. Once the students have been scheduled for a 60 minute lesson on their primary instrument, they will also be scheduled for 60 minutes of Art, 60 minutes of Music and Movement, 30 minutes of Guitar and 30 Minutes of Ukulele. Alternatively, our current 3rd grade students would be able to register for 60 minute lessons on their primary instrument via our "A la Carte" program and include enrolment in a 120 minute STEM course. Parents would have the ability to note which lesson times of the day work best for their family schedule during the registration process.
In order to provide a program that is consistent with current safety regulations and best practices regarding social distancing, we will offer registration in phases this year. We will also keep students separated into three groups when building the schedule. Current 3rd graders, current 4th/5th graders and Current 6th/7th graders will only be scheduled with each other. Exceptions include the Musical Theater Extension as well as certain STEM courses.
Phase 1- March 16- April 7- Registration for all 3rd Grade programs, all STEM courses, our Half Day Program (current grades 3-7) and our Full Day Program with Theater Extension (current grades 4-7) will be open on a first come first served basis. We have taken great care to offer an appropriate number of spaces based upon our available resources. Our Full Day Program with theater extension for current grades 4-5 fills every year, with a long wait list. We strongly recommend that you register quickly if your child wishes to enroll in this program. If you have specific questions about this program, we recommend that you register first. We can always edit your registration at a later date, but no additional spaces can be created for this popular program once all of the spaces are filled. Parents will see other courses listed under the "A la Carte" program that are shaded in grey with "0 spaces available" showing until this phase of registration has been completed and the next phase is opened.
After registration information from Phase 1 has been added into the master schedule, an appropriate number of spaces for each individual section of each course will then be updated in the registration system for our "A la Carte" program.
Phase 2 April 8- April 23- Registration for our "A la Carte" program will open. This will continue to include our new STEM courses. Students may enroll in as few as one course or as many as six courses, depending on space availability. Each section of each course will show the number of spaces available through the registration system. Any remaining spaces in our Half Day or Full Day programs will be visible but shaded in grey with "0 spaces available" until this phase of registration has been completed and the next phase is opened.
After information from the "A la Carte" registration has been added into the master schedule, an appropriate number of spaces for both the Half Day and "A la Carte" programs will then be made available for late registration. These will be on a first come first served basis and are likely to be limited.
Phase 3 April 24- May 14- Late Registration will be open with limited space availability for any program which has not been filled to capacity. If guidelines regarding social distancing have changed, we will be able to increase availability where feasible in every program except the Theater Extension and STEM courses.
