Columbia Sailing Club Junior Program - Summer 2018

Columbia Sailing Club is looking forward to an amazing 2018 Summer Program!  With classes for all experience levels, a fleet of Club-owned Optimist, C420's and O'pen Bic's, this will be a perfect summer to start or expand your sailing adventures. Our full-day (9am - 5pm) one week sessions are open to the public, you don’t have to own a boat and you don’t have to be a club member.  Each session is limited so sailors can enjoy an outstanding student/coach ratio of 4:1.  For Class Descriptions,  please scroll down this page to session sections.  

2018 Junior Sailing Dates:

  • Session 1 Dates: June 11 - 15 (9am - 5pm)  
    • Beginner 420$300 Member  $350 Non-Member - This course is for older and larger sailors who are new to sailing, or younger sailors with some experience but who are new to the 420. Course includes basics of rigging a 420, basic boat handling, seamanship (knots, weather, etc.), sportsmanship, and water safety. Instruction is done in club owned 420s with two sailors per boat.
    • Beginner Optimist $300 Member  $350 Non-Member - This course will teach the basics of rigging a boat, basic boat handling, sailing fundamentals, seamanship (knots, weather, etc.), sportsmanship, and water safety. A basic introduction to the sport of sailing. Instruction is done in Club-owned single sailor Optimists. Sailors learn the basics of steering, trimming the sail, and balancing the boat in an exciting, hands on way.
  • Session 2 Dates: June 18 - 22 (9am - 5pm) 
    • Intermediate 420$300 Member  $350 Non-Member - This course is for sailors who have completed the Beginner 420 course and want to continue their progression. Instruction is done in club owned 420s with two sailors per boat. By the end of the course, sailors will have been introduced to the spinnaker, trapeze, and more advanced boat handling techniques. This class will not participate in regattas.
    • Intermediate Optimist$300 Member  $350 Non-Member - This course is for sailors who have completed the beginner Optimist Course and want to continue their progression. Instruction is done in club owned Optimists with one sailor per boat. By completion, sailors will be able to sail on all points of sail in most wind speeds, know all parts of the boat, and tie basic knots. The goal being to better prepare students for the Opti Green program and future sailing.


  • Session 3 Dates: June 25 - 29 (9am - 5pm)  
    • Adventure Sailing - $350 Member  $400 Non-Member - This course is designed for those who want to be on the water but aren’t necessarily interested in racing. Adventure Boaters will be introduced to a variety of boats including: 420, keelboat,Optimist, catamaran’s and O’pen Bic. It will also explore navigation, boat mechanics, environmental awareness, and will take sailboat trips to local points of interest. This class is perfect for the child that loves the water and experiencing it in a variety of ways. This is an inspired alternative to the conventional racetrack route and build a foundation for lifelong sailors.
    • Beginner Optimist - $300 Member  $350 Non-Member - This course will teach the basics of rigging a boat, basic boat handling, sailing fundamentals, seamanship (knots, weather, etc.), sportsmanship, and water safety. A basic introduction to the sport of sailing. Instruction is done in Club-owned single sailor Optimists. Sailors learn the basics of steering, trimming the sail, and balancing the boat in an exciting, hands on way.


  • Session 5 Dates: July 9 - 13 (9am - 5pm)

  • Session 6 Dates: July 16-20 (9am - 5pm)
    • Intermediate Optimist/Open Bic - $300 Member  $350 Non-Member - This course is for sailors who have completed the beginner Optimist Course and want to continue their progression. Instruction is done in club owned Optimists with one sailor per boat. By completion, sailors will be able to sail on all points of sail in most wind speeds, know all parts of the boat, and tie basic knots. The goal being to better prepare students for the Opti Green program and future sailing. 6 Dates: July 16 - 20 (9am - 5pm)

You may sign up for more than one class.

CSC Sailing Director reserves the right to move a sailor into another program better suited to their skill and/or age.

Lunch:  (12:00pm - 1:00pm) Sailors are required to bring their own lunch. Students are not allowed to leave CSC during the day. 

Registration Notes: 

  • The registration is one long page. You have not completed registration until you click the 'Submit' button. All sailors must be registered online.
  • You will need your health insurance information (carrier and number) on hand to register. 
  • Registration is first come, first serve. Classes will sell out so get your registrations in early.
  • Minimum Age - Your child must turn 7 within 30 days of the start of the program.  No exceptions.
