TASC is a club at UMass Amherst that aims to promote awareness of Asian culture through education, performance, and choreography. The club was founded in 2015, and now currently has over 50 registered members in the UMass Amherst community. TASC consists of members of all skill levels from paid performers to eager first year students. Our members have performed in performances with audiences ranging from a dozen people to thousands of people. We hope to spread the love and culture of chinese yo-yo to the amazing students at PVCICS.
Our lion dance instructors are from Nam Pai, a Kung Fu organization located in Boston. We have participated in various lion dance competitions around the Boston area, and notably competed in the first USDLDF competition in Quincy. Our instructors have a background in teaching lion dance for the Asian American Cultural Center, and Kwong Kow Chinese School. In addition to teaching students how to perform in the lion, and perform with the instruments, we hope to teach the history and culture of lion dance and why it's important to many Asian cultures.
Students should wear comfortable clothing and sneakers to class. The class will be taught by four UMass/Amherst students who are experienced lion dancers and Yo-yo performers.
