This session of Chess Class is open to OSMS students in LE3 and Upper Elementary (3rd - 6th grade).
Chess Class meets on Tuesday mornings from 7:30-8:25 am for eight weeks, beginning January 21 and concluding on March 17, 2020.
Chess Class will be taught by Jim Della Selva, two-time Rhode Island State Chess Champion. Mr. Jim has been teaching chess to children (including here at the OSMS) for over 20 years. He is a nationally ranked chess expert who enjoys sharing the art and strategy of chess in a fun and accessible way.
Chess is a classic game of strategy, invented more than 1500 years ago in India. Legend has it that the ruler of India asked his wise men to devise a way to teach the children of the royal family to become better thinkers. Chess was the result. In the centuries since its invention, chess has spread to every country in the world. While countless other games have died out, chess lives on. In the United States, it has received endorsements by many educators, ranging from Benjamin Franklin to former U.S. Secretary of Education, Terrell Bell.
