CREATIVE MINDFULNESS

Meditation and Art
Mindfulness is a contemplative practice that has been shown to enhance focus and promote stress management. We will use drawing, painting, and other projects to explore a different path to living a more mindful life. No artistic experience is necessary, but established artists will discover new ways to experience their creativity. The practice of art accompanied by mindfulness leads to new insights and viewpoints of our individual experience in the world. Come join us to deepen your awareness, peace and presence.

CRAFT ARTS

Next Level Quilting - NEW
Do you want to learn to make beautiful quilts?  Do you have the basics of rotary cutting, measuring, and using a sewing machine? Then this is the class for you!  Each week you will learn a new technique along with helpful tips to make your quilts come together easily. Some experience is necessary along with a sewing machine in good working order.

Intro to Stained Glass and Mosaics

In this eight-week class, students will learn the fundamentals of stained glass and mosaics, and make a small stained glass project and a mosaic panel. Glass and tile cutting, grouting, soldering, fitting pieces to a pattern, and different approaches to mosaics will be covered. Class will be held at instructor’s private home. Advanced Stained Glass

Students will refining glass cutting skills, improving their soldering, and learn about pattern making, overlays, and ways of reinforcing larger panels, and create a more complex panel using the copper foil approach. Student will also get the chance to learn the method of “leading”, and create a small traditional leaded stained glass panel.
Prerequisite: Intro to Stained Glass and Mosaics Class, or prior stained glass experience. Class will be held at instructor’s private home. Location details upon class registration.

Introduction to Needle Felting and Wet Felting

Felt-making is an ancient art that can be found in many cultures. Although its origins were more practical than artistic, the old techniques have evolved and new ones have been invented. Modern felting often straddles the line between art and craft. If you love color and texture, and find satisfaction in creating things with your hands, this class is for you. Basic wet and needle techniques will be taught through weekly projects.

Continuing Needle Felting and Wet Felting

This class takes felt making beyond the basics. In addition to practicing wet and dry techniques, we will explore some new ones and begin to create original art through combining these elements. We will look into some of the more challenging techniques, such as Nuno, Shibori, slashing and resist. Some projects will require more than one class to complete. Open to adults who have some felting experience, or with permission of the instructor.

DRAWING


Writing and Illustrating a Picture Book
This course will focus on the creation of a picture book. This might be a book for children, a book of poetry, or an original text or a journal of travel.  Students will learn how to create a picture book using both the text and sequential images. Students may use media such as watercolors, acrylics, gouache, or pen & ink or digital images for those who have the necessary computer skills.

Figure and Portrait

Expression using the figure is the focus of this class. We will explore art history, anatomy as well as composition. The model will be used in a variety of poses-one week -shorter nude poses-2nd week a long pose and the 3rd week is a clothed portrait.  Media recommended for this class are pastel, charcoal, pencil, or acrylic paint. This class is open to those who are serious about being creative with the figure.

Long Pose Figure Study for Drawers and Painters

We provide the studio, model, easels, tables, and sculpture stands.  The first half hour of class will be shorter gesture poses, followed by two one-hour poses. Bring your own supplies.

Beginner Drawing

This class offers instruction for a beginner or for those who drew years ago and want a refresher course. We will begin with line, work into value, and progress from there into composition and perspective. The class builds from the lessons of the previous weeks, so consistent attendance is recommended. Student can explore drawing with different mediums including colored pencils, willow or vine soft charcoal or compressed charcoal, ink, and dry pastel.

The Umbrella provides a model and easels for 3 hours. Work in any drawing medium—bring your own supplies! Visit the website for model schedule and times.

MIXED MEDIA

Intro to Art: Understanding Basic Concepts – NEW
This class will explore different projects with understanding the basics of creating a colorful design. Each week builds on the previous week’s project. Bring your creativity and imagination and get to know the basic concepts of art.

PAINTING

Still Life Painting – NEW
In this class we will be painting the still life from direct observation. Each week we will work on a new set up of objects, both traditional (fruit and flowers), and more contemporary subject matter. The class addresses: composition, color relationships, how to begin a painting and learning new painting techniques as we go along. Oil paints are preferred, acrylics can be used. All levels are welcome.

Landscape Painting – NEW

Bring in your favorite landscape photos and learn the fundamentals of landscape painting. We will learn how to develop the visual space, how to construct your compositions and learn a variety of painting techniques.  Also, we will discuss various artists and how they have interpreted their work. Oil or acrylics can be used. All levels welcome.

Oil Painting; Considering Composition and Color
Working with oil paint is a rich experience with a long history. Join this congenial group of dedicated students working in a traditional approach, allowing room for great variety of sensibilities. Emphasis will is on the use of color/values and solid composition. Each class will begin with a series of projected images of paintings for the class to discuss and analyze. Still life arrangements will always be available as subject matter, or you can supply your own. All levels of experience are welcome.

Discovering Your Personal Style

This class is perfect for those who have already learned the basics of oil painting and who want to take it to the next level. The instructor will work with each student to see where they already are and to help them bring more of their own voice into their work by experimenting with different ways to paint, individualized color palettes, etc.

Beginner and Intermediate Acrylic Painting

Starting with basic techniques and an introduction to the acrylic medium, this course takes you through a series of exercises, with support from the instructor-your canvas will begin to reflect your newfound understanding of color and composition.

Technical Watercolor II

This class will emphasize technique and its importance in the development of the individual’s own style.  Intermediate to advanced students will work on classwork and homework projects that increase the range of their painting abilities.

Technical Oil and Acrylic II
A painting class that will emphasize technique and its importance in the development of the individual’s own style. Intermediate students will work on specific class projects. Advanced students will work on independent projects that increase the range of their painting abilities. Students will have the option of working in either oil or acrylic.

WORKSHOPS

Needle Felted Ornament Workshop - NEW
Join Umbrella felt making teacher, Elizabeth Stubbs for a quick and fun workshop. In two hours, you will learn how to make a small figure, hangable or freestanding, suitable for giving. Needle felting is east to learn and experience is not required. All materials will be supplied.

Glass Fusing Workshop - NEW
During this three hour workshop, students will learn about the principles of glass fusing. Students will also be exposed to different approaches to creating fused art. Tiles, earrings, sun catchers, and pendants are among the projects that students will create during the afternoon.

Stained Glass Workshop - NEW
During this one day workshop, students will learn about the steps used in creating stained glass art. Students will build a panel or sun catcher from patterns and templates provided by the instructor. Glass cutting, soldering, and finishing techniques are among the skills taught in the class. A Day to Paint Workshop - NEW
Many times, painting gets cut short, either by class time or your schedule. Set aside a Saturday to work for some extended time! Instructor Lois Andersen will guide your work in any level of experience. Class will include time studying a few great paintings and group discussion of class work. Bring your lunch. Coffee provided!
