CREATIVE MINDFULNESS

Handmade Journals, Mixed Media, and Mindfulness - NEW

The act of journaling can be calming and reduce stress. This class will start by making a handmade journal. As the course progresses there will be different mixed media techniques introduced such as printmaking, collage, and water color. Prompts will also be introduced to help you generate ideas and express yourself.

CRAFT ARTS

Introduction to Needle Felting and Wet Felting
Felt-making is an ancient art that can be found in many cultures. Although its origins were more practical than artistic, the old techniques have evolved and new ones have been invented. Modern felting often straddles the line between art and craft. If you love color and texture, and find satisfaction in creating things with your hands, this class is for you. Basic wet and needle techniques will be taught through weekly projects.

Intro to Stained Glass and Mosaics
In this eight-week class, students will learn the fundamentals of stained glass and mosaics, and make a small stained glass project and a mosaic panel. Glass and tile cutting, grouting, soldering, fitting pieces to a pattern, and different approaches to mosaics will be covered. Class will be held at instructor’s private home. Advanced Stained Glass
Students will refining glass cutting skills, improving their soldering, and learn about pattern making, overlays, and ways of reinforcing larger panels, and create a more complex panel using the copper foil approach. Student will also get the chance to learn the method of “leading”, and create a small traditional leaded stained glass panel.  Prerequisite: Intro to Stained Glass and Mosaics Class, or prior stained glass experience. Class will be held at instructor’s private home. Location details upon class registration.

Creative Quilt Making and Design
- NEW
In this course, geared to beginner through intermediate level students, we will design and sew our own lap size quilt (approx 48" x 64"). In each class, there will be instruction on a particular skill, technique or design element, as well as ample time to work on your own project. Interaction between students is also actively encouraged such that you benefit from each other's ideas. With a little added sewing time at home, each student should be able to finish his/her quilt top within the 8-week session, including a final class on free-motion quilting.

Color Your Quilts! - NEW
Do you want to expand your color ‘vocabulary’ in making visually successful quilts? Do you look at beautiful quilts and wonder how the maker decided on the color palette? The primary goal of this class is to provide students with the tools needed to make informed decisions about many aspects of color and design, and to apply this knowledge to quilt making. Students should be familiar with operating a sewing machine, the basics of quilt construction and the tools needed for quilting. This is a ‘hands-on’ color, design and quilting class.

Continuing Needle Felting and Wet Felting
This class takes felt making beyond the basics. In addition to practicing wet and dry techniques, we will explore some new ones and begin to create original art through combining these elements. We will look into some of the more challenging techniques, such as Nuno, Shibori, slashing and resist. Some projects will require more than one class to complete. Open to adults who have some felting experience, or with permission of the instructor.

DRAWING

Writing and Illustrating a Picture Book

This course will focus on the creation of a picture book. This might be a book for children, a book of poetry, or an original text or a journal of travel.  Students will learn how to create a picture book using both the text and sequential images. Students may use media such as watercolors, acrylics, gouache, or pen & ink or digital images for those who have the necessary computer skills.

Beginner and Intermediate Drawing – NEW
If it has been awhile since you’ve had an art class or if you want to feel comfortable looking and observational drawing, this class is for you! Learn how to be expressive with line, color and texture. Lessons are set up for differing levels, as each week becomes more complex. Different media are introduced along with helpful critiques and Art Historical references.

Long Pose Figure Study for Drawers and Painters
We provide the studio, model, easels, tables, and sculpture stands.  The class will start with three 5 minute gesture poses followed by one long pose for the remainder of the class. Bring your own supplies.

Landscape Painting
Bring in your favorite landscape photos and learn the fundamentals of landscape painting. We will learn how to develop the visual space, how to construct your compositions and learn a variety of painting techniques.  Also, we will discuss various artists and how they have interpreted their work. Oil or acrylics can be used. All levels welcome.

Oil Painting; Considering Composition and Color
Working with oil paint is a rich experience with a long history. Join this congenial group of dedicated students working in a traditional approach, allowing room for great variety of sensibilities. Emphasis will is on the use of color/values and solid composition. Each class will include looking at Master Painting images for the class to discuss and analyze. Still life arrangements will always be available as subject matter, or you can supply your own. All levels of experience are welcome.

Beginning Oil Painting - NEW
This class is designed for the beginning painter and also those who are returning to painting. With the use of still life objects, we will learn about composition, color, color values and some painting techniques. The class starts off with monochromatic painting and progresses into color the third week. As the term progresses, the class will keep building on procedures and techniques. Demonstrations will be given for most classes. Students will learn about the materials being used, such as the brushes and properties of oil paint. A supply list will be provided.

Contemporary Painting Techniques - NEW

Have you ever felt frustrated working from a photo? Would you like to loosen up and incorporate abstraction into your work? In this class you will discover contemporary approaches to paint application applicable to any style or subject. Study how contemporary artists make choices in color, material, and process to affect the meaning and mood of their work. Ask questions about your own work in order to grow as an artist and openly experiment with new techniques. Basic knowledge of painting is helpful, though all levels are welcome.

Watercolor Techniques
This class that will emphasize technique and its importance in the development of the individual’s own style. Beginning watercolor students will learn basic watercolor techniques. MIXED MEDIA


Basic Design Workshop - NEW
This class is for those who want to consider each of six Elements of Design: Color/Value, Line, Shape, Texture, Form/Space, and Unity/Harmony.  Abstract projects will be designed to build on one another for you to consider each of these. Each week class concentration will be on a different element, one building on another, with home projects to finish for the next class. You will enjoy working your way through these projects, an end in themselves, and can apply what you learn in many directions: painting, collage, stained glass, weaving, and so on. This experience will also help you in art appreciation as you learn to identify the elements of artwork you see in a museum or gallery.

Fused Glass Ornament Workshop – NEW

Paper Marbling Workshop - NEW
Originally a 15th century Florentine craft used for centuries to decorate the insides of books. Marbling is a very fluid medium. Modern uses are decorating lampshades, objects like boxes and stationary, etc. the effects and techniques are endless. We will use water based pigments, as well as other supplies. A supply list will be sent to students.
