2017-2018 Alternate Outside Physical Education Appeal Form

To meet Massachusetts Department of Education requirements, all current 10th and 11th graders need to fulfill a physical education requirement during both their junior and senior years. This is a graduation requirement for all students. At this time, the requirement can be fulfilled in one of three ways:

- Successful completion of one Physical Education course each year.

- Full participation and completion of one Winchester High School after school sport. No more than 4 absences (N rule is in effect).

- In rare situations, students who are involved in a rigorous physical activity program outside of school (Outside Activity) may register here (online) to appeal that their outside activity experience be approved to fulfill their physical education requirement. Approvals are done by the Athletic Office and the deadline for appeals are due April 7, 2017.

Approval criteria:

The approved outside activity must take place under the instruction of a certified coach/instructor (copy of current certification should be submitted when turning in the contract).

The student must complete a minimum of 90 hours of rigorous activity. This must all occur during the first semester and the level of participation is 5-6 days/week, 2 hours/day.

In order for the activity to be approved it must include the following health related components of fitness: body composition, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance.

Physical Activity in a workout club or gym, or independent study will not be accepted.

If you believe you have such a situation that fits the above criteria, please complete the online registration, in its entirety, by April 7, 2017. The registered appeals will be reviewed by the Athletic Office and students will be notified of the decision by May 5, 2017.

If the appeal is approved, the student must complete and submit the Outside Activity Contract. This form will be attached to the approval email. One signed copy of the contract must be submitted to the Athletic Office no later than May 12, 2017, for the process to be complete. Place the contracts in the Athletic Director's mailbox which is located in the High School main office.

To receive a passing grade, those approved students must complete the 90 hour commitment by the end of the first semester. It is the student's responsibility to submit the record/s of attendance,( completed and signed off by the coach/instructor), by the end of the 1st semester. All documents must be submitted to the Athletic Office. If the student does not follow up with turning in the attendance documentation, they risk receiving a Failure in Physical Education for the semester and ultimately possibly not graduating.
